The Options Market Memory: Trading by Analogy

Instead of asking a model for a point forecast, embed today's whole options-market structure and ask history: when did the market last look like this — and what happened next?

From forecasts to analogs

Point forecasts hide their uncertainty. An alternative with a long pedigree in quantitative research is retrieval: compress the current market state into a vector, find the thousand most similar historical states, and read the empirical distribution of what followed — returns, realized vol, IV expansion or crush, maximum drawdown and rally.

WOBR already operates this architecture for price patterns (the Market Memory engine behind the Similarity Lab, with a corpus of hundreds of thousands of historical windows). Options extend it naturally: the state vector gains the IV surface embedding, the flow tape, and the positioning map. 'Which past regimes had this surface shape, this skew trajectory, this gamma profile?' is a question a vector database answers in milliseconds.

Why distributions beat point estimates

A retrieval answer is a distribution: of 1,000 nearest historical regimes, how many saw IV crush within five days? What was the median drawdown? The tails? That output maps directly onto options structures — wide distributions favor long gamma, tight ones favor premium selling, asymmetric ones favor directional spreads — in a way a single expected-return number never can.

It is also more honest. When the nearest historical neighbors are far away (today genuinely resembles nothing in the corpus), the system can say so — that is exactly the anomaly signal, and it is often the most valuable output of all.

Status

The self-supervised chain encoder that powers our IV products already produces a 64-dimensional embedding per symbol per day — the raw material for options analog retrieval. Wiring it into the Market Memory retrieval stack with forward-outcome labels is on the Options Edge Engine roadmap. The daily anomaly board on the Signals page is the first shipped product of this line.
